As a continuation of our Subaru comparative review series, Suburban Subaru decided to see if the Chevy Equinox, a relatively popular compact crossover SUV, could pose a challenge to one highly sought after SUV available for purchase here at our Vernon, CT dealership in the Subaru Outback. Considerations of our review include fuel economy, interior space, safety ratings and all-wheel-drive systems, with the overall picture reflecting brightly on the new Subaru model we feature here on our lot. Read on to discover why:
2017 Subaru Outback vs. 2017 Chevy Equinox
- Whether you plan trips to the city over the weekend or usually find yourself on highway commutes to work in the morning, fuel economy is an important consideration that can have a big impact on your wallet. Fortunately, the Subaru Outback comes through with solid fuel economy at 25 miles per gallon city and 32 miles per gallon highway estimates, meaning you won't have to deal with this type of issue. The Equinox is less reliable, however, with 21 miles per gallon city and 31 miles per gallon highway, respectively.
- The Outback is the more comfortable of the two, with an interior that generates more front leg, hip and shoulder room to accompany more rear shoulder and hip room for guests than the Equinox.
- Symmetrical all-wheel-drive in Vernon, CT is a massive advantage, and something that comes standard across the board in every Subaru Outback model. The same can't be said for the Equinox, however.
- When considering safety of both vehicles, choose the perfect overall crash test ratings of the Outback over the four star rating of the Equinox. The Subaru model additionally tops the Chevy SUV in overall frontal barrier, frontal barrier passenger, side barrier driver and combined side front seat ratings.

There are always the typical questions that pop into your head when beginning to do research on an SUV that will match your lifestyle here in Connecticut. A few examples go something like:
- Will I be getting value with the price of this vehicle listed?
- Does this model align with the changes in season around where I'm from?
- How does this vehicle do from an efficiency standpoint?
The ponderings go on, but the main point remains that there are plenty of things to think about with your next daily driver, especially when pitting two specific models up against each other. Suburban Subaru took the liberty of handling some research similar to this for you, taking the Subaru Outback and answering questions very similar to the examples above in relation to the capabilities of the Ford Edge and what both models have to offer you.
2017 Subaru Outback vs. 2017 Ford Edge
- Price is always a great place to start, as vehicles out of a certain budget range won't make the cut right off of the bat. We don't anticipate that being an issue with the Outback, as this value-driven model comes in at a price tag over $3,300 less in MSRP than the Edge. This equates to estimates of nearly $60 a month in savings, a big deal when considering the length of terms for car payments.
- The next obvious factor has to be the climate you live in, and the Outback is certainly the more fitting model when considering the seasonal aspect of Connecticut and the winter that comes with it. Symmetrical all-wheel-drive comes standard in all Outback models which the Edge can't offer, helping you grip the roads better and stay in control despite whatever the road conditions happen to be.
- Gas-sipping vehicles are valuable, and the Outback really outdoes the Edge in fuel economy with an estimated 25 miles per gallon city and 32 miles per gallon highway respectively. The Edge only comes in at 21 miles per gallon city and 29 miles per gallon highway, a significant difference.
